I grew up on a small Scottish island called Auskerry, which is solely inhabited by my parents. My parents named me and my two older brothers after the island where we spent our childhood. Auskerry is part of Orkney, which is an archipelago situated off the north coast of Scotland.
Due to geographical necessity, me and my brothers were home-educated for a large part of the year until the age of 14. For the remaining months of the year, I went to school in the small city of Kirkwall on the Orkney mainland.
My parents own and run a sheep farming business on the island: you can see what they do and sell on their own website: isleofauskerry.com
I have just been reading about Auskerry in the book ‘Some Lovely Islands’ by Leslie Thomas (1968).
What a fascinating place, then owned by John Dennison who farmed sheep there, but lived elsewhere on the Orkneys.
